No Vietnam Visa at the Airport? What to Do Right Now

If you're reading this at the check-in desk, skip ahead to What to do in the next 10 minutes.

This guide is for travelers at their departure airport, about to fly to Vietnam, who have just discovered they don't have a visa. It is not for travelers who have already landed in Vietnam without one — see the note below if that's your situation.

Quick orientation: which situation are you in?

  • You haven't boarded yet, flying to Vietnam, no eVisa. This guide is for you. Keep reading.
  • You are already in Vietnam without a valid visa or your stay has expired. This is an immigration matter that must be handled with Vietnamese authorities directly (at your point of entry or a local immigration office), not through an online visa service. A private agency cannot resolve an overstay or an undocumented entry for you.
  • Your eVisa was submitted and is still "processing." See our guide on speeding up a pending eVisa application instead — this is a less urgent situation than having nothing submitted at all.

The hard truth first

Your Vietnam eVisa must be approved before you board, not after you land. Airlines check for a visa (or proof of visa exemption) at check-in because they are fined if they carry a passenger who gets refused entry at the other end. So the honest goal here is: get an approved eVisa in your hand before your boarding gate closes, if that is still possible.

We cannot promise this will work. Vietnam Immigration decides whether to approve any application, and how fast, not us. What we can do is tell you what's realistically on the table and help you move as fast as possible.

What to do in the next 10 minutes

  1. Check if you actually need a visa. Some nationalities are visa-exempt for short stays. If you're unsure, don't assume — check now rather than losing time. See our Vietnam eVisa requirements guide.

  2. Check if you already applied and forgot. Search your email for "evisa.gov.vn" or "Vietnam Immigration." If you have an application reference number, that changes your options — go to our urgent visa page instead.

  3. Message us right now with the essentials, don't wait to type a long explanation:

    • Nationality
    • Boarding time and gate closing time
    • Airline and flight number
    • A photo of your passport photo page

WhatsApp us now — this is faster than email in this situation.

  4. Ask the airline how much time you realistically have. Gate closing times vary. A few extra minutes can matter.

  5. Have a passport photo ready. Most eVisa applications also need a portrait photo. If you don't have one, a plain phone photo against a light background is usually enough to start.

What's realistically possible

Vietnam's fastest standard-track emergency eVisa option targets a 1-hour result, but it only runs on working days within a set application window (currently Monday to Friday, 08:00–10:30 Vietnam time). Outside that window, or if your boarding time is sooner than that, an eVisa simply cannot be produced in time through any private service — no agency, however it advertises itself, can bypass Vietnam Immigration's own processing.

If the numbers don't work in your favor, here is what we will tell you honestly:

  • Whether a correction or re-submission makes sense if you already have something pending.
  • Whether rebooking your flight for later the same day or the next working day is your most realistic option.
  • Whether visa-free entry or a different route applies to your nationality.

We will not take a service fee if we cannot realistically help with your specific deadline.

What to tell the airline at check-in

If your eVisa isn't ready yet, be upfront with the check-in staff rather than hoping they won't check. Airlines generally cannot board you to Vietnam without an approved visa or valid exemption, because they are liable if you're refused entry on arrival. Ask them directly what your options are: a later flight the same day, standby, or rebooking.

If you're about to miss your flight

  • Ask about rebooking fees and same-day availability before you leave the counter.
  • If you rebook, use the extra time to apply properly rather than repeating the same rush. Our standard and urgent eVisa options show realistic timelines once you're not racing a boarding gate.
  • Keep your passport photo and documents ready so your next application goes faster.

Frequently asked questions

Can I get a Vietnam eVisa approved in minutes?

No service can guarantee minutes. The fastest standard option targets about 1 hour, on working days within a set application window, and even that depends on Vietnam Immigration's own processing and is not guaranteed.

Will the airline let me board without a visa?

Generally no. Airlines are responsible for passengers who are refused entry at their destination, so most will not board you to Vietnam without an approved eVisa or confirmed visa exemption. Policies vary by airline, so ask the check-in staff directly.

What if I'm already in Vietnam without a visa?

That's a different situation from this guide, and it needs to be resolved with Vietnamese immigration authorities directly, not through a private visa service.

Is there anything I can do outside working hours or at night?

You can still message us and we will respond, but the emergency eVisa processing window itself is set by Vietnam Immigration, not by us, and currently runs on working days. Outside that window, your options are usually limited to rebooking.

Will I be charged if nothing can be done in time?

No. If we cannot realistically help before your deadline, we will tell you honestly and will not charge a service fee.
