Do Canadians need a visa for Vietnam? Yes. Canadian passport holders need a visa to enter Vietnam, and the simplest option is the Vietnam eVisa: you apply online, pay US$25 (single entry) or US$50 (multiple entry), and receive it by email. It is valid for up to 90 days, and official processing usually takes about 3 to 5 working days.

Canada is not on Vietnam's visa-exemption list, and you cannot simply buy a visa at the airport. This guide covers what is specific to travelling from Canada: which option fits your trip, when to apply for a winter trip, how your time zone affects the timeline, and the mistakes that cost people days.
Do Canadians Need a Visa for Vietnam?
Yes, for every trip to mainland Vietnam, whether you are travelling for tourism, business or to visit family. Be careful with websites claiming that Canadians can enter visa-free. Rules change, so rely on the official portal and current government information.
Most Canadians will use the eVisa, but a few situations work differently.
| Your situation | What to do |
|---|---|
| Holiday or business trip to mainland Vietnam | Apply for the eVisa at evisa.gov.vn |
| Vietnam plus Cambodia, Laos or Thailand, then back again | Choose multiple entry (US$50), so you can re-enter on the same visa |
| Staying on Phu Quoc Island only | You can stay up to 30 days without a visa if you arrive directly from abroad. The island only |
| Phu Quoc is the plan, but the mainland is possible | Skip the Phu Quoc exemption and get the eVisa. A change of plan could leave you without a valid visa |
| You are Vietnamese-born, or the spouse or child of someone who is | Ask the Vietnamese embassy or consulate about a visa exemption certificate, valid for up to 5 years |
| Stay longer than 90 days | The eVisa will not cover it. Arrange a different visa type before you go |
If you are not sure which row you are in, the single-entry eVisa is the safe default for a normal trip.

How to Apply for a Vietnam eVisa From Canada
The application takes about ten minutes if everything is ready.
- Check your passport. It must be valid for at least 6 months after your arrival date and have blank pages.
- Prepare your files. A recent, front-facing passport-style photo on a plain background, plus a sharp scan of your passport photo page with all four corners visible.
- Fill in the form on the official portal. Copy your name and passport number exactly as printed. Choose single or multiple entry, your arrival date and your entry airport.
- Pay the government fee online by card. Save your payment confirmation and application code.
- Wait for approval, then download your eVisa from the email.
- Check every detail on the approved visa: name, date of birth, passport number and dates.
- Print it and carry it with your passport when you fly.
Most delays and rejections trace back to a small mismatch in step 3, so take your time there. If payment fails, see our guide to Vietnam eVisa payment problems.
Vietnam Visa Cost for Canadians
The government fee is the same for every nationality:
| eVisa type | Government fee |
|---|---|
| Single entry | US$25 |
| Multiple entry | US$50 |
Two things to know as a Canadian:
- The fee is charged in US dollars. Your card issuer converts it to Canadian dollars and may add a foreign transaction fee, so the final charge is a little higher than the straight exchange rate suggests.
- The fee is generally non-refundable, even if the application is rejected. That makes accuracy more valuable than speed.
If you use a visa assistance service rather than applying yourself, you pay a service fee on top. Ask for the total price in writing before you pay. You can see our fees on the pricing page.
How Long Does the Vietnam eVisa Take for Canadians?
Official processing is about 3 to 5 working days, but "working days" means Vietnamese working days. That is where Canadian winter trips run into trouble.
- Tet (Lunar New Year) falls in early February 2027. Government offices close for several days around it and processing slows down. If your trip overlaps with Tet, apply earlier than you normally would.
- Weekends do not count. An application sent on a Friday afternoon in Toronto reaches Vietnam on Saturday morning, so the clock effectively starts on Monday.
- Peak seasons get busy. Reading week, Christmas and New Year, and March break all produce a rush of applications.
A simple rule: apply 2 to 3 weeks before departure, and earlier for anything near Tet.
Canada to Vietnam Time Difference
Vietnam is on GMT+7 all year round and does not use daylight saving time, so the gap changes with your location and the season.
| Where you are | Vietnam is ahead by |
|---|---|
| Vancouver | 14 to 15 hours |
| Calgary | 13 to 14 hours |
| Toronto or Montreal | 11 to 12 hours |
| Halifax | 10 to 11 hours |
Common Mistakes Canadians Make When Applying
Using a look-alike website. Fake sites copy the official portal and add their own fees. The government portals are evisa.gov.vn and thithucdientu.gov.vn. Check the address before you enter any personal details.
Dual citizenship confusion. If you hold two passports, use the same passport for the application and for entering and leaving Vietnam. An eVisa is tied to one passport number.
Entry airport mismatch. Most flights from Canada connect through Asia or the Middle East, so your final arrival airport may not be where you first expected. Enter the airport you will actually use. The common ones are Hanoi (HAN), Ho Chi Minh City (SGN), Da Nang (DAD), Cam Ranh (CXR) and Phu Quoc (PQC).
Arriving before the start date. You can arrive on or after the start date on your eVisa, never before it.
Not checking the approved visa. Fixing an error is far easier from home than at the airport.
Need a Vietnam Visa Urgently?
Last-minute trips happen: a family emergency, a work trip, or a flight booked before checking the rules. If your eVisa has not arrived and departure is close:
- Check your status on the official portal using your application code, and make sure your details are correct.
- Read the emergency Vietnam visa guide to see what urgent processing involves and what to ask before you pay anyone.
- Contact us through the urgent visa page if your departure date is tight.
No service can guarantee approval or an exact timeline, because the decision belongs to Vietnamese immigration. Never board a flight before your approved visa is in hand.
Frequently Asked Questions

How much is the Vietnam visa for Canadians?
The official government fee is US$25 for a single-entry eVisa and US$50 for a multiple-entry eVisa. A visa assistance service adds its own service fee.
How long does the Vietnam eVisa take?
Official processing usually takes about 3 to 5 working days. It can take longer around weekends and public holidays, especially Tet, so apply 2 to 3 weeks before you travel.
How long can Canadians stay in Vietnam?

Does Vietnam accept the eVisa at land borders?
Many border gates accept it, along with international airports and some seaports. Check that your entry point is on the approved list before you travel overland.
Prefer Someone to Double-Check?
Applying yourself is straightforward, but a small typo can cost you days. If you would like a person to review your details before they are submitted, you can apply for an eVisa with our team or message us on WhatsApp.
